Spotlight on Action: RESPIN Subnational Workshop at COP16

On the 24th of October the RESPIN Subnational Workshop took place during the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16 at the iconic Humboldt House. This workshop brought together a dynamic assembly of stakeholders and representatives at the subnational level in Colombia dedicated to addressing the interlinked crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Subnational actors are closely connected to local communities, uniquely positioned to adapt global commitments into customised, effective local actions. Hence, their participation is essential for achieving transformative change.

The workshop explored the question:“What prevents greater adoption of IPBES and IPCC findings in the formulation of public policies on climate change and biodiversity at the subnational or local level?’’. It served as a platform for participants to discuss innovative strategies for integrating the latest findings from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) into public policy frameworks. Participants engaged in discussions about the systemic barriers hindering the adoption of these science-based recommendations and brainstormed collaborative solutions to bridge these gaps.

Humboldt House, a venue renowned for its dedication to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, provided the perfect setting to foster dialogue and partnership in Cali, the city that hosted COP16. The central question was how to bridge the gap between research and practical policymaking, empowering subnational actors to take the lead in implementing transformative strategies for biodiversity and climate resilience.

The insights and connections forged during this workshop not only contribute to the overarching goals of COP16 but also reinforce the shared imperative of global collaboration in preserving our planet’s ecosystems for future generations.

A heartfelt thank you to all who participated in this vital conversation, helping to turn knowledge into action and paving the way for a more sustainable future!
